There's something ironic about not having time to write something substantial about these worrying new stats because I'm so busy writing and supporting others to write a response to the draft RSHE guidance which has a big focus on delaying information and not talking about sex until a point where many young people are already asking questions about it, watching it, researching it, and having it. The idea we shouldn't talk about sex until as late as possible because it's inappropriate or problematic, and warnings against 'explicit' discussion (whatever that is - I prefer accurate and specific) just reinforces the culture which makes it hard for people to recognise when they don't want sex, to say no to sex, to negotiate safer sex, to ask a partner to use a condom, to talk to a health care provider, to get a test, to notify a partner after a positive test....etc Sexual health stigma is harmful. Talking about sex doesn't make people have more sex, in fact when it comes to young people it helps them to delay sex, reduces the age difference between sexual partners and increases condom use. These statistics are really worrying. I see them and just know that we need to talk about sexual health more, not less, sooner, not later.

Completely agree Lisa! If you need some commissioner and local govt input we will always back you - good RSE, healthy sex positive info in schools and FE colleges, info on healthy relationships, service info and myth busting as early as possible are all vital in this fight - we have to equip our YP with high quality information and empower them, to start to reduce this tide of STIs - to think they want to water it down is quite incredible ! Keep going 🙌💪💪💪💪

Putting age limits on topics as the Government is proposing in the revised #RelationshipsAndSexEducation guidance shows a lack of understanding of the pedagogy of #RSE. There are no magic moments when it's suddenly ok to talk about a topic for the first time. There is the gradual development of understanding, knowledge and skills: meeting the capacity of children as they age;and addresding their needs as they are exposed to increasingly complex challenges growing up. The spiral curriculum concept captures that process well.So much of RSE is about the 'how' not just the 'when'. That's why teachers crave training, skills and confidence.

Sexpression is run by young people who work with young people every day. They have concluded that the draft revised RSE guidance is not fit for purpose and are calling on the gvt. to #DumpTheDraft. If you agree you can sign and share their petition here.

Just before the new STI stats are released a timely blog about the need for innovation in condom distribution, learning from young people all the way.
