The direction and pace of the US energy transition could face a major shift depending upon the outcome of the upcoming election - two candidates with very different strategies are competing for their place in The White House. The residents of the White House have also had an impact on its energy use in the house itself - "light bulb Johnson" famously had a habit of turning off the lights even when meetings were still going on and various administrations have installed solar panels on the roof (Carter, Bush and Obama) or taken them down (Regan), indicative of their approach to the wider energy industry.Today in Washington D.C. the etasca team was discussing the energy transition at the in the beautiful city. Here's eight things we learned:1️⃣ Nikolaj Knudsen discussed developments at Topsoe. The company is investing heavily in the energy transition including the development of $400million manufacturing facility for SOEC Electrolysers (after receiving $136 million in federal tax cuts). The facility will be built in Chesterfield, Virginia.2️⃣ Laura J. Geiman discussed the membrane developments of electrolysers. the same people that make the material for your raincoat and the innards of your modern set of bagpipes are now producing membranes for electrolysers, with an unique reinforced layer giving increased cell voltage efficiency gains of ~5%.3️⃣ The need for H2 tech neutral policies was brought up by Haley Armstrong AJW Group. Regulatory guidance and policy changes can cause uncertainty and instability in the H2 market, and therefore government policies should focus on the goal of carbon reduction rather than which technology is deployed.4️⃣ Randy Lack from Anew Climate wants to tap into the low carbon potential of sources such as swine manure to meet the 0.45 kgCo2e / kgH2 target and maximize 45v credits.5️⃣ One of the first movers under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) LPO program, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES) Delta project will produce 100 tons per day of green H2 and store it in two salt caverns that can hold up to 150 GWh of energy each. The goal - a more sustainable reliable grid with greater carbon reductions in the West.6️⃣ Ben Thomas from Mitsubishi Power, Brian Foody and the LOGEN Groupare expanding on their cellulosic ethanol experience with carbon negative fuels such as SAF using biomethane from a biomass feedstock.7️⃣ It's Roxana Bekemohammadi mission at the USHA to educate policymakers and push for harmonized H2 policies across all 50 states to ensure a consistent and hom*ogenous implementation.8️⃣ Finally, Sasha Annett & Rushab Shah closed the summit out with a call to continue the discussion around H2 to bridge the gap between education and potential and connect the global H2 ecosystem using its HydrogenHive platform.#etasca #energy #renewables #hydrogen #DOE #H2Americas2024

Thank you for recognizing Haley Armstrong's contribution to the conversation. In early technology development days, it may not be clear which technologies will scale, and policy needs to allow for future adjustments in market dynamics. Additionally, many solutions will need to come together to address climate concerns. Technology-neutral policies allow for winners to emerge with lower risks all around.

etasca was privileged to be in attendance at TXF Global 2024 in Athens this week, where the gods of export finance gathered and energy transition topics were at the fore. Here’s etasca’s 8 conference takeaways:1️⃣ Multiple ECAs indicated that they are now willing to finance projects with reduced or zero domestic content, if shown to benefit domestic exports or in the case of Export and Investment Fund of Denmark reduce domestic scope 3 emissions.2️⃣ Likewise, many ECAs such as Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (Ksure) and EKN Exportkreditnämnden they will raise the coverage limit where the project aids the energy transition, lowering the bankability hurdle.3️⃣ Andreas Klasen interrogated the heads of the net-zero ECA alliance (NZECA) whose members will end direct support for the fossil fuel sector by next year – Peter Boeskov declared the importance to lead by example, whilst Magnus Montan wondered what the other ECAs were waiting for to join?🤔 4️⃣ Eng. Saad Alkhalb of Saudi EXIM Bank and Raja Al Mazrouei of Etihad Credit Insurance (ECI) outlined how the ECAs of these historically fossil fuel-reliant countries are focussed solely on non-oil sectors.ECI has committed $500 million in credit insurance to African projects as part of the UAE's Africa Green Investment Initiative.5️⃣ Global finance heads agreed that Europe will remain the main destination for ECA finance for now, however Manav Futnani of HSBC was adamant the Middle East would take the lead imminently due to the vast number of Saudi deals in development, stating that if half of the pipeline manifests there is not enough capacity to finance this!😲6️⃣ Malick Ba, MBA and Ismael Nabe of the governments of Senegal and Guinea outlined how their countries are making great leaps in the energy transition, with large-scale electric transportation systems and development of hydroelectric and solar projects. However, there were also calls for increased grants for the energy transition, as well as more flexibility from ECAs and DFIs toward oil and gas projects in the developing world.7️⃣ Dr. Georg Bauer of Siemens Energy and Uday Mathur of GE Vernova supported this, and were clear they believe ECAs should still be sponsoring gas projects as part of the transition – unclear as to why these would not be financed in Africa while e.g., Germany is building gas plants at home, particularly as gas power plants can incorporate a proportion of hydrogen.8️⃣ The expanding role of ECAs with time was highlighted by contributors including Bert Bruning of Atradius and Yeliz Tufekcioglu Kucukaltan of SACE – having initially been established to support exports, the function for many now also includes securing import of critical materials, supporting exports to Ukraine 🇺🇦, and supporting energy transition projects which would otherwise not be considered bankable due to high capex and technology scale-up risks.Congratulations to the Exile Group organising committee on a fantastic event!
